New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez wants an investigation into the New York City Police Department's surveillance of his state's Muslim communities.
The senator sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and CIA Director David Petraeus, stating that he has "grave concerns" about the program and asked whether proper procedures were being followed.
Senator Charles Schumer echoed Mayor Michael Bloomberg's earlier sentiments, in saying the NYPD was only tracking online sources that are in the public record.
“Look, first, I have a lot of faith in Commissioner Kelly. He’s very smart. He’s very capable and he doesn’t have a bigoted bone in his body," said Senator Charles Schumer. "From what I’m told, the only surveillance that has come about has come about from public records, things that are online, things that anyone can see."
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Newark Mayor Cory Booker also say they have concerns about the program.
