New Yorkers Urged To Repurpose Christmas Trees In "MulchFest"

The city is urging New Yorkers to "treecycle" this weekend, by turning their Christmas trees into wood chips at the 17th annual MulchFest.
The holiday trees can be brought to one of more than 80 sites across the city this Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The trees will be turned into mulch to nourish plantings, parks and green streets.
Participants can even take home a bag of mulch for their own backyards.
"Here's a moment for us to take joy in those trees again, give them new life, give them an opportunity to enrich our trees and plantings all around the city," said Manhattan Councilman Daniel Garodnick.
"It's a great opportunity to return your trees back to nature and it's a great opportunity to keep them out of landfills," said Parks Commissioner Veronica White.
Participants are bringing to first strip their trees of lights and decorations.
