A new rooftop garden is giving some Bronx students a chance to flex their green thumbs.
The new garden was unveiled Wednesday morning at The Haven Academy Charter School on Brown Place in Mott Haven.
It's part of a partnership with Bolthouse Farms and the New York Foundling to help get kids into eating healthier foods.
Herbs and vegetables will be harvested by students and used in cafeteria meals throughout the year.
"It's wonderful. The students actually pass this area of the building everyday so they get to look outside and see the progress the plants are making and what's nice is they learn about it in science class. They learn about how vegetables root. They learn about the different types of vegetables and then they plant them and as you can see things start to grow and we get the opportunity to cut them, take them inside, talk about them, learn about them more then eat them," said Haven Academy Founding Principal Jessica Nauiokas.
"We find that if we can get kids working with vegetables, growing them getting more involved, it kind of changes their relationship to them," said Bolthouse Farms CEO Jeff Dunn.
As a special treat, students got a cooking lesson from celebrity chef and nutritionist Ellie Krieger.
"We invited them to make their own creation by exploring the tastes and textures and aromas of the food, and I think that is a wonderful way to teach kids about nutriton to have them explore it themselves," Krieger said.
Students who spoke with NY1 say they were pleased with their salads featuring grains, beans and, of course, veggies.
"It's really tasty," said Student Edgar Feliz.
"I usually don't like celery but I tasted it and now it's good," said Student Sarah Rodriguez.
The opening helped kick off Food Day 2012, a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.
