Transit Advocate Attempts New Subway Riding Record To Try To Halt Fare Hikes

A Brooklyn woman will try to break the Guinness World Record of traveling the entire city subway system, in hopes it will help stop the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's impending fare hikes.
Stefanie Gray, a mass transit advocate from Transportation Alternatives, plans to ride every line in the New York City subway in less than 22 hours, 52 minutes and 36 seconds.
She is calling it the "Race to Stop the Fare Hike."
Gray hopes the stunt will get 50,000 New Yorkers to sign a petition asking Governor Andrew Cuomo to stop the fare hike.
More than 15,000 people have already signed it.
"If you think just five years ago, a 30-day MetroCard was $76. Now it might rise to $125," Gray said. "You know, we hear so much talk in the media about gas prices going up, what about hard-working New Yorkers who can't afford to shell out half of their paychecks for an unlimited?"
Gray's ride starts at noon Tuesday on the 1/2/3 line in Penn Station.
