Former Mayor Ed Koch is in the hospital.
He's being treated for anemia at New York Presbyterian, where he's expected to remain for several days after receiving a blood transfusion.
His spokesman said Koch became ill while at a friend's house in North Carolina over the weekend.
He was not planning to attend the Democratic National Convention, although he is a superdelegate and supporter of the president's re-election.
Koch will be 88 in December.
