The governors of New York and New Jersey are looking to Washington for help funding and managing the National September 11th Memorial and Museum.
Governor Andrew Cuomo and Governor Chris Christie are backing a bill co-sponsored by Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand that would provide permanent federal support.
The governors sent a letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar requesting the National Park Service take a role in maintaining the site.
They say the Park Service's support would ensure the site's longterm stability.
A private foundation now runs the memorial.
Congress would have to approve any Park Service involvement.
Work on the unfinished museum has been stalled because of funding disputes with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
A spokesperson for the memorial says it looks forward to working with the governors to get the bill passed.
