Immigrants in the city and their supporters say they are generally happy with President Obama's immigration policy changes announced Friday but some say it is not enough.
Lawmakers and those affected by the changes rallied in Washington Heights Saturday in support of the DREAM Act, which would go even further than what the president announced.
Friday's executive order offers two-year work permits to illegal immigrants under 30 who were brought here as children, as long as they're not convicted of a serious crime.
But advocates at the rally say families could still be torn apart by deportations, unless Congress and local government act on the the more comprehensive legislation.
"This is certainly a first step in the right direction," said State Sen. Adriano Espillat. "However, it doesn't resolve the need for a major comprehensive reform for immigration. And I think it provides an opportunity to call on Governor Cuomo to approve the DREAM fund for New York State."
If passed, the DREAM Act would help establish a clear path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
