A year after the scandal broke, disgraced French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn is suing the hotel maid who accused him of sexual assault, claiming her allegations severely damaged his reputation.

Strauss-Kahn filed a countersuit against Nafissatou Diallo for $1 million, accusing her of falsely reporting she had been sexually assaulted.

Court filings say the Sofitel maid's allegations also hurt the former International Monetary Fund chief's professional opportunities admitting he "was considered by some to become the next president of France."

The criminal case against Strauss-Kahn collapsed, but a judge is allowing proceedings to continue on a civil case filed by Diallo.

Her attorney says they are confident the countersuit will not be successful.
