There was an outpouring of love for Whitney Houston in Harlem Monday, and according to reports, the singer’s family may hold funeral services in Newark’s Prudential Center at the end of the week. NY1’s Michael Herzenberg filed the following report. Two days after Whitney Houston's personal staff found her dead, police in California said Monday that they found no evidence of foul play and that this is not a criminal investigation.
Whitney Houston's body will reportedly go to Whigham's Funeral Home in Newark, the city where Houston was born.
She was raised in nearby East Orange, but just across the river in Harlem, many mourned her death as if she was a local.
"Whitney was awesome. I first saw her in the early, mid 80s in the Miller Concert Series on the West Side Highway. She was absolutely beautiful. Powerful voice," said one fan.
"She was a beautiful, full, wonderful human being and we're going to miss her," said another.
They gathered to comfort each other and celebrate her life in an event Monday night hosted by local radio stations that included silence and prayers. Some left flowers or signed tributes to the pop music icon and actress at the Apollo Theatre. They all said Houston touched their lives.
"She's the first person that inspired me to live my dreams and become a singer and to become a performer, so it's very devastating, but I'm happy she's in a better place,” said one fan.
"It’s just very hard today to see all of this. It's very surreal. But I'm trying very hard to be strong for her,” said Kim Burrell, a gospel artist.
Houston's friends and family are struggling on TV and in private to make sense of what happened.
The 48-year-old pop star was found dead Saturday in a bathtub in her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, hours before she was supposed to appear at a pre-Grammy Awards party. Investigators say a small amount of prescription medication was found in the room.
Houston had struggled with addiction issues, but it could be weeks before a cause of death is known.
An autopsy was performed Sunday, and toxicology results are pending.
