Grocery stores in the five boroughs could soon be getting inspections like the city's restaurants if one Queens lawmaker gets his way.

The New York Post reports State Senator Tony Avella wants the city Health Department to perform inspections at grocery stores and farmers' markets using the state's food safety code.

Avella says the state Agriculture Department isn't up to the job.

He tells the Post most sanitary violations happen overnight and agriculture workers don't make any inspections after 5 p.m.

The owner of the Gristedes supermarket chain tells the Post the city is just trying to boost its bottom line by collecting more fines.
