Union leaders are sounding off against the New York City Fire Department's recent directive prohibiting firefighters from keeping opinion-based materials in firehouses.
The Uniformed Firefighters Association says this would prevent firefighters from keeping items such as a Bible, newspaper or magazine at work.
UFA President Stephen Cassidy issued a memo this week telling his members to ignore the fire department's ban calling it unconstitutional.
According to the New York Times, an FDNY spokesman says the original directive was too broad and has been re-worded to specify that firefighters should not post opinion-based materials on walls or bulletin boards of firehouses.
Posting unofficial materials on bulletin boards has always been prohibited.
