Prosecutors and defense lawyers were discussing on Monday a possible plea deal with Jose Pimentel, the Manhattan man accused of plotting to set off homemade bombs in the city.

Jose Pimentel, 27, is charged with building a homemade bomb to try to attack soldiers, police cars and post offices.

Defense lawyers and prosecutors met in court briefly on Monday.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office tells the Associated Press it hopes to have a deal or take the case to a grand jury by March 1.

Pimentel is being held without bail on charges including weapons possession and conspiracy as terror crimes.

Authorities say Pimentel is a Dominican-born al-Qaeda sympathizer who was acting independently.
