The groups are part of a coalition of animal advocates that rescue dogs that are used for breeding in so-called puppy mills.

Advocates say hundreds of thousands of dogs are forced to live in deplorable conditions, with some even being sent to kill shelters after they can no longer breed.

The event was part of a national campaign to save dogs from mills and close a loophole allowing breeders to sell dogs online.

"Some of the worst breeders, who maybe lost their license or maybe have a lot of violations, they just say, 'Oh I don't need my USDA license anyway' and they'll just sell puppies on the Internet," said Kelli Ohrtman of the Puppies Are Not Products Campaign.

"She'll be seen by our vets. Her teeth will be done. She will be spayed and neutered. And any other medical conditions will be treated. We'll love her and find a loving home for her. Her first loving home," said Michele Forrester of the Animal Rescue Fund, Hamptons Chapter.

The so-called Pups Bill would amend the Animal Welfare Act to protect the dogs from abusive and unlicensed breeders from selling the dogs on the Internet.
