A viewing for Queens Councilman Thomas White Jr. was held Wednesday night in Jamaica, Queens.
Services for the 71-year-old native of South Jamaica, who died of cancer last week after serving the 28th District in southeast Queens for more than 14 years, were held at the Allen A.M.E. Cathedral on Merrick Boulevard.
White spent 10 years on the council until 2001, and then ran again for his old seat in 2005. He was then reelected last year.
The former chair of the City Council's Economic Development Committee, White was also the executive director of one of the largest substance abuse centers in the state.
"He was all about helping people to help themselves in the war against drugs. He was there himself many years ago and he made a commitment to advocate for those to get them services," said J-CAP Director Diane Gonzalez.
White's funeral will also be held at Allen A.M.E. Cathedral at 10 a.m. Thursday.
The councilman is survived by his mother, two children and two grandchildren.
