If a Democratic primary were held today, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand would have a strong lead over her speculated opponent, a new Marist poll shows.

If matched up against former Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford Jr., the poll found Gillibrand with 44 percent of the vote, while Ford received 27 percent.

Researchers say Gillibrand's main backers come from the suburbs and upstate.

She didn't fare as well in the city, where more than half of the Democratic vote will come from in the primary.

The Marist poll also found that currently 25 percent of Democratic voters are still unsure about who to support.

The poll found that Ford has some recognition issues with 67 percent of Democratic voters saying they've never heard of him or are unsure how to rate him.

The poll of 838 registered voters was conducted over a two day period starting January 25th.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
