“I think it’s really important that we don’t stick our heads in the sand, whether there’s a big event or not,” said one local resident. “I think we can be assured that there will be crowds in Rhinebeck this coming weekend.”

Although no one really referred to it by name, everyone knew what was being referred to by the big event – Chelsea Clinton’s wedding.

Many of the shopkeepers were openly enthusiastic about the Clintons and the big "do" coming to town.

"The merchants of Rhinebeck are very excited to be a part of the Chelsea wedding,” said shop owner Lila Pague. “Hosting this event in Rhinebeck is the biggest thing that's happened in 25 years, that I know of!"

"You know, we have the fairgrounds north of town here and whenever there's a big event at the fairgrounds, it's not necessarily good for business,” said shop owner Doug Shippee. “There are a lot of people that do come to town, but others that would come otherwise, stay away because of the traffic and so on. Not to say I'm negative in any way about the event, you know, the big wedding happening here, I think it's a great thing."

Rhinebeck Town Supervisor Thomas Troudt is not discouraging New Yorkers from coming and celebrating along with the Clintons.

"We encourage tourism in our town,” Troudt said. “That's our industry. We have a lot to offer for people, but let's celebrate all year long, not just this weekend. You’re certainly welcome to come to Rhinebeck any time. It's a great place. If you've been here you know that. The Clintons seem to know that."
