As a Hudson River village prepares for the wedding of the year, NY1’s George Whipple travels there to discover that this is not the first time a president has come to call on this little town.
The Chelsea Clinton wedding will likely take place this weekend in Rhinebeck, New York, about 90 miles north of New York City on the Hudson River.
The small town is no stranger to presidential visits, says historian Nancy Kelly, who wrote several books on Rhinebeck history.
“George Washington came here and asked our resident Richard Montgomery to be the general in the Revolution and then he came later during the Revolution because his surgeon general lived in Rhinebeck,” Kelly said. “I’m sure they were at the Rhinebeck Arms at both occasions.”
“Martin Van Buren was here,” continued Kelly. “And, of course, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was giving his Election Day final speech always from the front of the Beekman Arms.”
Roosevelt also used the pool in the Astor Courts, where Clinton is said to hold her wedding reception, to exercise after he was diagnosed with polio. The property, which is now owned by Kathleen Hammer and Arthur Seelbinder, was once known as the casino on the Ferncliff Estate.
The wedding tent may be constructed on the property’s namesake, where the old tennis courts were located.
Former President Bill and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may be staying at GlenBurn, a Colonial Revival house, according to a source. The rumor is that the rehearsal dinner will be held the stone barns on the Grasmere Estate.
Exciting is building in the community ahead of the family’s arrival.
“[Bill] was here a few years ago and that was exciting,” said store owner Lila Pague. “It was a quiet afternoon and as soon as he walked around the corner, people ran out the doors, wanted to hold his hand, get his autograph, take a picture. So it was a prelude to what’s going to happen this weekend, I guess.”
