NY1 VIDEO: As NY1 revisits its 20-year history, the station looks back at reporter Andrew Schmertz's August 1997 hospital bedside interview with Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant brutally assaulted by police officers in Brooklyn.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: Five NYPD officers were ultimately criminally investigated in connection with the assault on Louima, though only two served jail time. Justin Volpe, the officer who confessed to sodomizing Louima, is currently serving a 30-year sentence, due to end in 2025. Abner Louima now lives with his family in Florida.
