The weather, a new casino and a political scandal were just some of the stories topping the headlines in Queens in 2011. NY1's Ruschell Boone filed the following report.

Democrat Anthony Weiner resigns after accidentally Tweeting a picture of his crotch to thousands of Twitter followers. His departure leads to a stunning special election victory for Republican Bob Turner in the heavily democratic 9th Congressional District.

Barbara Sheehan also grabs headlines as she is acquitted of murdering her husband, a retired NYPD Sergeant. She says it’s self defense after years of domestic abuse. Sheehan is sentenced to five years in prison on a gun related charge, but remains free on bail pending an appeal by her attorney.

Gamblers are not disappointed as the city's first racino opens at Aqueduct Racetrack with great fanfare. After a record breaking weekend Resorts World New York continues to rake in millions of dollars in state revenue.

Not as plentiful is the 2010 Census count for Queens, which only rings up an increase of 1,300 more residents in the last decade. The numbers have local leaders crying foul and the city disputing the results.

There is fallout over the city's dismal cleanup of the Christmas blizzard. Unplowed streets leave many stranded for days. Residents also brave an earthquake and hurricane.

A series of sex assaults has women on edge. NYPD crime statistics for this year through the first week in December show rapes are up: 12 percent in Queens North and 21 percent in Queens South. Misdemeanor sex crimes are also up but murders are down.

Marking the 10th anniversary, family and friends gather in Rockaway to remember the 265 victims of the Flight 587 disaster. The plane crashed in Belle Harbor two months after the terror attacks on the World Trade Center.

And, there is Pia Fever. The Howard Beach resident is voted off American Idol but Pia Toscano goes on to sign with Interscope Records.
