1958...The atomic powered submarine "Nautilus" receives an enthusiastic welcome in New York after crossing the Atlantic Ocean in six and a half days – then a record for undersea travel.

1964...U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy announces his candidacy for Senator from New York in a speech at Gracie Mansion. He is elected that fall.

1980...Tragedy mars opening night of the hit Broadway musical "42nd Street" as producer David Merrick announces the shocking news that director Gower Champion had died earlier that day.

1983...Fire races through "New York Street" in Hollywood, destroying the sets from several classic New York films.
