"Life During Wartime", a new film by Todd Solondz, premiered at the IFC Center this week.

Solondz is best known for the film "Welcome to the Dollhouse."

His latest film is a sequel to the movie, "Happiness."

"It's a comedy, but a very sad and poignant one, I think,” Solondz says. Like all my work, I suppose, I ask a certain open-mindedness."

Ally Sheedy plays one of the three sisters in this ensemble film.

"I had more fun working with him as a director than I have with, I'd say most directors that I worked with,” says Sheedy. “I don't know what it is. He's got, like, a feeling or something."

"Todd Solondz, he is a beautiful nightmare,” says actor Michael Kenneth Williams, who also is in the film. “He beat me up a whole lot. He comes across as really calm, mild-mannered, sweet guy, and he pulls his bat out and he clubs you in the head if you miss one word on his script, but, he pushed me."

Dylan Riley Snyder, 13, is well-centered for an actor of his age.

"I just kind of read over the script and kind of got into the dark comedy zone that Todd usually puts his movies in,” says Snyder.

While he’s known as an Indie darling, Solondz believes his films can be watched by anyone.

"The thing is not to be afraid,” he says. “I mean, it's not an art movie in the sense that, 'Oh, I can't follow it..what's going on.’ It's very accessible. It's a story that really anyone can understand and it's for adults, of course it's not for children. I don't see how this would be bearable if it weren't a comedy of sorts and so I think the idea that you can have a good time is really paramount with me."

“Life During Wartime” is at the IFC Center starting tonight.
