Thousands of drivers in New York have learned about the state's new distracted driving law the hard way.
Governor Andrew Cuomo's office says since legislation passed back in July making "distracted driving" a primary traffic offense, more than 72,000 tickets have been issued for texting or talking on a cellphone within the five boroughs.
The most tickets were written in Manhattan, followed by Brooklyn.
The majority of them involved drivers talking on cell phones.
Before July, police could only give a summons for using a handheld device when pulling someone over for another traffic offense.
Now, drivers caught using a handheld device can get up to three points on their license.
