INSIDE THE PAPERS

The New York Times

Christine Haughney writes: “Just as New Yorkers have grown used to blaring televisions in the back of taxis, the Taxi and Limousine Commission is considering another electronic option: embedded tablet computers. The commission is weighing a proposal by Square, a mobile payment company based in San Francisco, to replace Taxi TVs in 50 cabs with similarly shaped iPads or other tablets. If approved, the pilot program would allow riders to play computer games and swipe a credit card at any point in the trip.”

David Chen notes: “In the surest sign yet that he is planning to run for New York City mayor in 2013, Bill de Blasio, the public advocate, has hired prominent consultants best known for their work with candidates like Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Rahm Emanuel. One of the consultants, John Del Cecato, who is now working on Mr. Obama’s re-election campaign, will be responsible for making Mr. de Blasio’s television advertisements. A longtime New York resident, Mr. Del Cecato is a partner at AKPD Message and Media, which was founded by the political strategist David Axelrod, an adviser to the Obama campaign. Mr. Del Cecato also recently worked on the successful campaigns of Mayor Anthony R. Foxx of Charlotte, N.C., and Mayor Edwin M. Lee of San Francisco.”

Sharon Otterman reports: “After a week of indulging in Italian cooking, chatting with fellow new cardinals from around the world and sharing his elevation with crowds of visiting pilgrims, Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, the archbishop of New York, said Monday that he was eager to return home and laid out four challenges to the archdiocese as among his priorities. Cardinal Dolan spoke in an interview just before his formal audience with Pope Benedict XVI, the last ceremony of the week. Upon his return, he said, he first wanted the church to be more effective locally and nationally in its outreach to immigrants, particularly Latinos, who are no longer in Catholic schools in the numbers they once were.”

New York Post

Mitchel Maddux writes: “The feds claim former New York Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. coached a woman to lie before a federal grand jury investigating corruption allegations against him, The Post has learned. Although witness tampering is a crime, Brooklyn federal prosecutors are not charging Espada with new counts stemming from the incident — but they want the jury in his upcoming corruption trial to hear about the alleged misconduct. Prosecutors identified the witness as one of the top executives at Soundview Healthcare Network, Espada’s not-for-profit medical firm, which was financed by taxpayer dollars.”

Josh Gosman reports: “New York Republican Harry Wilson is running for the Yahoo! board, not US Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s seat, The Post has learned. Shareholder activist Dan Loeb last week launched a proxy battle against the search giant — and his slate of candidates for Yahoo!’s board includes Wilson. The proxy contest would occur this summer, at the same time Democrat Gillibrand will be campaigning for her re-election.”

New York Daily News

Ken Lovett writes: “Gov. Cuomo still stands ready to veto the legislative district boundaries drawn by the Legislature, aides said Monday. Cuomo aides deny growing sentiment that a deal with lawmakers has been reached — or is close — on the once-a-decade redistricting.”

Until tomorrow.
