Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed off on legislation moving the primaries for state and local elections to avoid having them fall on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

The primaries had been scheduled for Tuesday, September 11 but the legislature pushed the elections back two days to September 13.

Lawmakers say the move allows for a day of reflection and unity and honors those who died during the attacks.

A similar measure was passed back in 2007, ahead of the sixth anniversary.
