A cab strikes and kills a woman trying to cross the street on the Upper East Side.
Police say it happened around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Madison Avenue and East 79th Street.
They say the taxi driver was making a left onto 79th Street when he hit the 58-year-old woman, who was trying to cross the street.
Authorities say the taxi landed on top of her.
Several men rushed in to help, trying to free her under the cab, but she suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at Lenox Hill Hospital.
"We decided to lift the car. So I took what strength I had and I just belted out and just lifted the car, and the other two guys pushed it, and then we rested it on my thigh and then braced ourselves, and then we tossed it over," said Justin Havlik, who helped lift the car. "It was kind of a shock, and it's very, very, very sad."
Havlik said it was clear that the victim suffered severe head trauma.
The driver is a 30-year-old man.
NY1 is told he remained at the scene and that witnesses described him as being shocked at the events.
So far, no charges have been announced against the driver.
The NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.
