The Department of Education says it gave away more free meals this summer than ever before.

The city used appearances by famous New Yorkers like Yankee Manager Joe Girardi to try to get the word out about the Free Summer Meals program.

It provides free breakfast and lunch to kids under 18 years old at about a thousand locations citywide.

The DOE says it gave away eight million meals this year, or about half a million more than last year.

The program's four food trucks saw an especially big jump in demand. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
