Indicted state Senator Malcolm Smith has received a key endorsement from an influential Queens pastor.

The Rev. Floyd Flake, who served in Congress in the 1980s and '90s, endorsed Smith outside his church Sunday morning.

Flake said Smith would fight the charges against him, and even cited charges he himself faced in the '90s that were eventually tossed out.

Smith's bribery trial ended in a mistrial earlier this summer. A new trial is set to start in January.

"I went through the same process. I went through the trial. They had nothing on me, but they tried to hold me back because they didn't want me in the office, and I think they are doing the same thing to him," Flake said. "I am endorsing Malcolm Smith. I believe that he's the best of the candidates, and I believe he will be the best for southeast Queens."

"I am honored and humbled," Smith said. "These are gentlemen who have a stamp on southeast Queens like no one else."

Smith faces a tough re-election battle against former City Councilman Leroy Comrie and attorney Munir Avery next month. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
