A group of the Times Square costumed characters are organizing in an effort to protect their rights.

They say they'd like to have their art respected by police as part of their protected constitutional rights.

One of the groups helping the characters is La Fuente.

Representatives say they're an organization that empowers immigrants, workers, and their communities.

"I think the best thing is that regular individuals, people on the ground, can organize and become a stronger force when they're united collectively. All they want is an opportunity to have the respect and dignity that they deserve as human beings, and to ensure that they are not a prime target for the NYPD," says La Fuente Executive Director Lucia Gomez.

"They're here to make Times Square a family-friendly environment and they're not here....that a few bad apples that they've heard about in the press recently don't define the whole bunch. They want to be viewed as just as part as any other attraction in Times Square—something that you look forward to when you get here," says La Fuente Communications Director Alex Gomez.

Last month, a man dressed as Spider-man was arrested after police say he hit a cop who told a tourist she could tip whatever she wanted.

The Times Square Alliance released a statement saying: "“We agree that many costumed characters are earnest, hardworking and respectful. But for those that are not, a licensing scheme is still needed to protect consumers from the aggressive and inappropriate behaviors that have been documented countless times.” ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
