A new public service announcement from the state transportation department aims to better protect its workers.

The ad features the family of Gary Farrell, a worker who was killed in 2009 when a car hit him while he was flagging traffic in a work zone.

Governor Andrew Cuomo's office says there were more than 500 work zone accidents last year, leading to two deaths and almost 150 injuries.

In the PSA, Farrell's widow urges drivers to be aware of maintenance workers when driving in construction zones.

"I hope that people realize that they're just trying to make the roads better. They're doing their job and just want to go home at night. Please pay attention. Please be aware that they're people—not just equipment, not just cones," Farrell says in the video.

Cuomo's office points out that drivers who get two or more speeding tickets in work zones could have their licenses revoked. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
