Bratton Meets with NAACP to Discuss Garner Incident

  • Text size: + -

Police Commissioner William Bratton met with the president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to talk about improving police relations with the community.

They met for over an hour at police headquarters to discuss ways to help prevent another incident like the one in which Eric Garner died.

Afterward, Cornell Brooks told reporters the conversation was productive.

"He conveyed to me that he was open to any number of strategies and techniques. You have to talk to him about the particulars of that, but one of the things I was encouraged by was a open-mindedness and a responsiveness to the most thoughtful, effective community policing techniques," Brooks said.

A video shows a police officer using an apparent choke hold during Garner's arrest, which is against department rules.

Garner was being arrested for allegedly selling individual cigarettes illegally.
