Today is the first day that workers covered by the city's new paid sick leave law can start using their accrued sick time.

Under the law, businesses with five or more employees must provide paid sick leave if they work more than 80 hours per year.

Businesses with fewer than five workers must provide unpaid leave.

Workers can accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours per year.

In a statement, the Commissioner of the Department of Consumer Affairs said, "July 30th is truly a historic day in our city because more than a million workers no longer have to choose between their jobs and caring for themselves or a family member."
