While Congress debates the issue, State Senator Adriano Espaillat suggested his own solution to the child immigration crisis.

He called for an expansion of Temporary Protection Status which protects immigrants in the U.S. who can't return home because of a crisis.

This status has been granted to some children and family members from El Salvador and Honduras, but not all.

"I feel very strongly that this type of status should be given to these children, and that Guatamala, which is currently not in the program should be included. That the program should be amended to include these children, so they have some sort of protection while they determine their future or status here in the United States," Espaillat said.

Other suggestions included rejecting federal legislation that will weaken laws currently protecting children from exploitation and human trafficking, and increasing New York's individual participation in the protection and housing of children without family members in the country.
