In court Friday, City Councilman Ruben Wills tried to take the focus away from himself and put it on the state attorney general's record.

The councilman faces fraud and grand larceny charges, criminal allegations brought by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The trial was put on hold after the councilman's attorneys requested a special prosecutor to take over the case.

Wills and his legal team said Schneiderman is politically motivated and should be removed from office.

"Let him run his campaign, but don't be dragging an innocent man through the mud simply because you need a headline," said Sally Butler, Wills' attorney.

"It seems like it's open season on anyone who refuses to help a prosecution with a case," Wills said. "If you say no, then all of a sudden, you are being prosecuted also. I think that's an abuse of prosecutorial powers."

In a statement, a spokesman for the attorney general said in part, "It's no surprise that someone charged with perpetrating fraud and corruption against the taxpayers of New York is attempting to distract from the alleged crimes."

Wills will not be back in court until a decision is made about the special prosecutor.
