A new car hailing app is launching in the city without permission from the Taxi and Limousine Commission.

The San Francisco based Lyft, announced that starting Friday night at 7 p.m. they will be deploying its signature pink-mustachioed cars in Brooklyn and Queens, allowing them to pick up riders who use the app to signal them.

This, despite the fact they have not received an operating license from the city who is urging them to agree to TLC-required driver background checks, drug tests and inspections.

However, on their website the company contends that their own screening process is more stringent than the city's.

People who spoke with NY1 were happy to hear about the new transportation option.

"Anything to get you anywhere is great, said one New Yorker.

"I think it's great I just recently moved to Midwood so living in one of those very very outer places the green cabs have been great, and ride sharing with pink mustaches sounds awesome," said another New Yorker.

The Taxi Workers Alliance calls the Lyft model an assault on the livelihood of tens of thousands of cab drivers. Many of them say they are already facing tough competition.

"Spend gas, $60 gas everyday. You have to pay the lease. It's very difficult right now to make some money, said one yellow cab driver.

"Yes I am worried about my future. I am planning to leave this job and find something else," said another can driver.

Lyft charges a minimum fee of $8. Users then pay $2.15 a mile.

The company is offering two weeks of free rides to new customers in the city. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
