With mosquito season upon us, Sen. Charles Schumer wants federal officials to step in to stop a new insect-borne infection.

The Chikungunya virus is prevalent in tropical climates and is known to cause severe fever, excruciating joint pain and rashes.

The disease spreads quickly via mosquito bites, and with no known vaccine, Schumer is concerned travelers in South America for the World Cup could bring it back to the United States.

He is urging the Center for Disease Control and the Department of Homeland Security to issue a health alert, educating doctors and increasing border protection and food inspection.

"We have to prevent the spread of this virus before it reaches the United States in large numbers, and we must prevent CHIKV from becoming locally transmitted," Schumer said.

Cases of the virus have already been reported in 15 states this year.
