Fans of Costa Rica were ecstatic after the country's soccer team pulled off its second big upset in the World Cup Friday.

Costa Rica beat Italy Friday 1-0, scoring the only goal of the game late in the first half.

Italy is still alive, but needs a win or tie in its next match to advance.

The result mathematically eliminated England.

For Costa Rica, the win clinched a spot in the second round for them for the first time since 1990.

NY1 caught up with some very excited Costa Rican fans celebrating in Midtown.

"Yes, tonight, Costa Rica played a great game. We defeated one of the greatest teams in Europe, and we played better than them. So it was a great win for Costa Rica," said one fan.

In Group E action, France crushed Switzerland 5-2 to improve their record to 2-0.
The Swiss fell to 1-1.

In the late game, Ecuador beat Honduras 2-1.

France leads the group with 6 points.
