Parents and community leaders gathered at P.S. 48 in Washington Heights Friday to demand the Department of Education do something about classroom trailers at the school.

The group wants the DOE get rid of two trailers they claim are infested with rats and full of mold and mildew.

Hundreds of classroom trailers were installed across the city in the 1990s in what was supposed to be a temporary solution to overcrowding.

Officials say the two trailers in Washington Heights will have to stay for another five years but parents say the school building has room for everyone.

"I'm right now to an extent that I can just call a few of my friends and we knock them down ourselves, that's how upset I am right now," said Emmanuel Guzman, a P.S. 48 parent.

"I dare you chancellor Fariña to come with your grandkids to put them in the trailers and then you tell me you're going to wait five years, I don't think so," said Sharinne Betances, a P.S. 48 parent.

The DOE says it's made repairs to the trailers as needed and that there is no mold or mildew problem.
