The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is warning New Yorkers to avoid a website that claims to help people find missing property then charges a fee.
Lostpropertynyc.com allows users to fill out a form about items that went missing on subways and buses, in taxis, or at the airport. But it also asks for personal information, then creates a bill that can be paid online by credit card.
The site suggests that it reaches out to the MTA about lost property. However, the agency says it has no connection to the website or any other third-party that claims to help find lost items.
Police have opened a criminal investigation into the site.
The MTA reminds riders that it does not charge a fee to submit a claim to its lost and found units.
