A bloody gash on his right foot may have hurt California Chrome chance to make history at the Belmont Stakes.

The Belmont favorite suffered a foot injury when he was bumped by the horse next to him while leaving the starting gate in Saturday's race, the Associated Press reports.

The wound tore a chunk of flesh from his hoof, causing an injury that today his trainer said should take about two to three weeks to heal, according to AP.

Tonalist just edged Commissioner at the wire to win the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes.

Medal Count came in third.

Calfornia Chrome finished in a dead heat for 4th place.

Even the winning jockey says it's too bad history was not made.

"We all rooting for California Chrome, you know there's no doubt about it. But I got a win and we're happy with that," said Joel Rosario, the jockey for Tonalist.

"Just the last step, we failed, but I still feel the same about him. I think he's the best horse I ever rode and today he don't have it," said California Chrome's jockey, Victor Espinoza.

California Chrome could have been the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 36 years.
