The weather certainly cooperated this Memorial Day and many took advantage of the sun by heading to the sandy city beaches to soak up the sun. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report.

Even though temperatures were in the 80s, the water was a little cooler, more like in the 50s—but that didn't stop beach-goers at Coney Island from taking a dip.

"I was surprised, no, the water's not that bad. Once you get in there and you are in there for a couple of minutes, it's fine," one person said.

So this intrepid reporter decided to go in up to his ankles.

While it was still a little chilly, it was all part of the fun as thousands made their way to the famous beach front to dig in the sand, play some volleyball (even without a net) and soak up some rays.

"The sun's great. The water is great. You don't get that really in the city. So you get the best of both worlds," said another beach-goer.

For some, it's a yearly tradition to be here on Memorial Day.

For others, it was a first—like these folks from Switzerland.

"The water is a little bit still cold but it's fine, it's very nice," the man said.

Other first-timers didn't have to travel all the way from Europe to have a little fun in the sun.

"I've never been here. My son and my step-daughter wanted to come. (Where are you from?) I'm from Queens, but I go to Long Beach or Jones Beach and I've never been here and I love it, it's beautiful," said one woman.

With the boardwalk jammed, business owners were glad to see the crowds, and folks couldn't get enough of the scene.

"This is the perfect day, awesome day. To have fun with the kids and the family," another woman said.

The beach is only part of the fun here at Coney Island. Of course, you have all of the food and the rides too.

...Which means heavy duty stuff like the legendary Cyclone, or some lighter fare.

"(Was it too scary?) Frightening. Absolutely frightening. I didn't know what to do with myself," a woman said as she exited a carousel.

She was kidding, right? Anyway, it was a great day to kick off the summer season for everyone who stopped by.

The hope is there are plenty more days like this ahead for this famed amusement area. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
