Gunshots rang out, only to be followed by a deadly accident.
Police say a driver being chased by a group of men struck and killed his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend.
25-year-old Jonathan Mejia faces a number of charges including murder, manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while impaired.
Police say around 3:30 a.m. Sunday Mejia was in a minivan with a female passenger trying to get away from four other men.
Investigators say he struck and killed 43-year-old Edward Jenkins as Jenkins was crossing University Avenue between West 175th and 176th street.
A gun was found next to Jenkin's body and investigators believe the woman in Mejia's van was Jenkins' ex-girlfriend.
Police say shots were fired before the accident, but it is unclear who the shooter was.
Some residents heard the commotion.
"I heard four shots at 3:30-ish in the morning... I was scared. My mom looked out the window to see what happened," said one area resident.
"I heard the shots and all the alarms went off like crazy... Car alarms, yeah," said another.
"When I wake up this morning, the police was come, knock the door, they tell me somebody got kill outside, do you know something about it? I told them no, I heard the noise, I heard the car, and somebody was screaming," said a third.
Police say the woman isn't facing any charges.
