Even the garbage costs more in the city.
According to a survey by the Citizens Budget Commission, the city is at the top of the heap in collection costs—coming in at $251 a ton.
When you factor in disposal, that number shoots up to $431.
The watchdog group says that's more than double what it costs private firms.
Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia is defending the costs though, saying the city pays for and receives the highest quality sanitation services in the country.
The city spends about $1.6 billion a year to handle roughly 3.8 million tons of trash.
