Governors Island is opening to the public this weekend.
The transformation of the island from a military base to a public space takes a giant step forward this weekend with the opening of the city's newest park.
The 30-acre, $75 million green space snakes from the historical center of the island to the harbor shoreline.
This is the first year the island will be open to the public seven days a week until it closes in September.
Also for the first time, a round trip on the ferry will cost you $2, but if you go before noon on a weekend it's free.
