A Long Island man is facing charges after police say he got into two car accidents Sunday afternoon, including one that killed a 9-year-old girl.
Police say Kenneth Palache, 62, of Huntington is charged with criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of a deadly accident, and driving without a license.
Investigators say it started when Palache got into an accident with his Honda Odyssey at 87th Street and Foster Avenue in Canarsie.
When officers caught up with him and asked him to get out of the minivan, he sped off.
Police say the Palache then struck a Hyundai Elantra and a Toyota Sienna two blocks away at Avenue N and Remsen Avenue.
Rebecca Ramnarine, 9, was riding in the Elantra and was killed in the crash.
"She was a diva, that was the best way to explain her. She likes to get dressed up, loved to play in mommy's makeup, and loved, loved to wear jewelry, and she just got her first pair of shoes with high heels," said the young girl's mother, Abiola Ramnarine.
A woman who lives nearby says she sees drivers speeding in the area all the time.
"It used to be so quiet. And now every other day there's an accident. And it's just too terrible. I have a 9 year old too. And God forbid if somebody were to hurt my child. And to see that my child passed away. It's speechless, I have nothing. It's too terrible. It makes you want to cry," she said.
Two other people in the Elantra and three in the Sienna were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
