Police Commissioner William Bratton said Wednesday he wants to use social media to increase transparency in the NYPD and dismissed many of the negative reactions to the Twitter hashtag #MyNYPD.
On Tuesday, a social media campaign by the NYPD backfired in a very public way.
The department asked Twitter users to share photos of them posing with officers using the hashtag "my NYPD" saying it might feature the pictures on its Facebook page.
Some users showed their appreciation for the city's Finest but the responses soon turned ugly.
Many users tweeted pictures they claim showed police brutality, including several shots from Occupy Wall Street members.
The hashtag was trending for much of the afternoon, but not for the reasons the department intended.
"Most of those photos that I looked at, they're old news. They've been out there for a long time. The reality of policing is that often times our activities are lawful, but they look awful," Bratton said.
In a statement, the NYPD said Twitter provides a forum for open dialogue that is good for the city.
