A two-year investigation into an international drug ring moving heroin and cocaine into the city ended Tuesday with more than a half dozen arrests.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation says seven people were taken into custody in the city Tuesday morning and served a 15-count indictment of narcotics trafficking, money laundering and firearm offenses.
Investigators say the group had connections with Mexican drug cartels, as well as an organized crime syndicate in Southern Italy.
"This was part of an international drug organization between Italy and New York. The Italian organized crime family was trying to get involved with a New York family," said George Venizelos of the FBI. "We were able to successfully run an operation against them in order to prevent that."
Seventeen arrests were made in Italy as well.
The investigation is ongoing.
