It looks like it'll be three years before Rockaway residents will be able to fully enjoy their Hurricane Sandy-battered boardwalk.

Officials are now setting Memorial Day 2017 as their target to completely rebuild the boardwalk.

The delay is being blamed on a rare bird species that nests on the beach.

Because of the endangered species, crews will have to stop working for months.

Much of the boardwalk was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.

The new plan is to reinforce the boardwalk with concrete foundations and sand berms.

The community board has approved plans for the construction.

More than 100 blocks will be rebuilt in five phases.

The project is set to begin this Memorial Day.
