NEW HAMPTON, N.Y. - A Manhattan man is dead after crashing his powered paraglider in upstate New York.

Police say 47-year-old Rupert Cebular was practicing touchdowns on the ice of Wallkill River when he fell through Wednesday afternoon.

Cebular's friend was on a separate paraglider and pulled him from the river, but he was already dead.

The other pilot was taken to a hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

Based on his YouTube post, Cebular recently started flying the aircraft.

"I've seen gliders crash. We've had hot air balloons go down. We've seen regular aircraft crash," said Captain Brendan Casey of the New York State Police. "This is a sort of a newer type thing, these ultralights, and there's various types of ultralights, so I don't know if I've ever seen one of these go down."

Cebular worked for or possibly owned a bike shop on the Upper East Side. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
