A plaza in the middle of McCarren Park pool in Greenpoint will be turned into an ice skating rink next month. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report.
It doesn't quite look like it just yet, but the plaza at McCarren Park Pool, also known as "The Beach", will soon be covered in ice to welcome hundreds of skaters.
"We're bringing really the first and only outdoor ice skating rink to North Brooklyn. People in this neighborhood love their parks and love doing things in the parks and so this is going to be one more great thing they can do in the winter," said North Brooklyn Parks Administrator Ed Janoff.
The rink is part of the $50 million renovation project that allowed the pool and play center to reopen last summer after being shut down for nearly 30 years. It is scheduled to open on November 15 and stay in operation through January or even longer if it proves to be popular.
"You will be able to rent skates, buy skates, there will be a concession for food, a pro shop. We're going to do a holiday market around the perimeter of the pool so it will be a really full service winter destination," Janoff said.
The rink will not be regulation size for hockey but park officials say they still plan on having hockey skills clinics, skating lessons, and maybe even some curling.
Neighborhood residents who spoke with NY1 on Wednesday were looking forward to being able to lace up skates and hit the ice.
"I usually go to Manhattan to skate but now that it's closer to my neighborhood I'm excited to go and see what it's like," said one Greenpoint resident.
"I think it's a great idea I think it's another activity to add to McCarren Park and it's a great way to use the pool in the winter," said another Greenpoint resident.
"Anything to keep the kids engaged and in the community and out of trouble I think is a great move," said a third resident.
