People who were injured or became ill as a result of the September 11th terror attacks are being urged to register for the Victims Compensation Fund before the deadline on October 3.

Elected officials, union officials, and others gathered in lower Manhattan on Monday to remind and emphasize that the deadline is quickly approaching.

They say it is not an application, so even people not sure if they're eligible for any compensation should still register.

Most first responders and survivors who were injured or became ill as a result of the attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania are eligible.

More than 27,000 people have registered so far for the funds, which come from the Zadroga Act.

"We can't prevent anyone from getting sick, we can't prevent anyone from dying, but we can help them now while they're alive to take advantage of this legislation, which took us 10 years of back and forth in hard fought battles in Washington. So please, I urge everyone involved, register for the Victim's Compensation Fund," said Richard Alles from the Uniformed Firefighters Association.

Those who believe they may be eligible for compensation can register by October 3 at vcf.gov.
